Installing PromNotch and other apps from outside the App Store

Published: 2 min read

Many Mac apps are distributed directly from the developer's site rather than through the App Store. That is how many utilities work when they need wider system access than the store allows. PromNotch is one of them.

Installation takes a couple of minutes, but on first launch macOS asks for confirmation. Here is what happens and what to click.

Step 1. Download the image

Get PromNotch.dmg from the download page. Only download apps from the developer's site — not from file-sharing services or links in chats.

Step 2. Move the app to Applications

Double-click the .dmg file. A window opens with the PromNotch icon and the Applications folder. Drag the icon onto the folder. After that you can eject the image and delete the .dmg file.

Step 3. Confirm the first launch

PromNotch has not been notarized by Apple yet, so macOS shows a warning the first time you open it. That is the system's standard reaction to any app without notarization.

  1. Open PromNotch from Applications. A warning appears — close it.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down: there will be a line about PromNotch with an “Open Anyway” button. Click it and confirm with your password or Touch ID.

On some macOS versions a shortcut also works: right-click the app in Applications and choose “Open”.

Step 4. Grant permissions

PromNotch shows a short list of permissions: Calendar, the microphone for dictation, Accessibility for pasting text. You can grant each now, later or never — the related feature simply stays off. The player and shelf work without special permissions.

If you bought a license

Open PromNotch → Settings → License and paste the whole key. No network is needed to check it. Prices and plan contents are on the pricing page.

How to uninstall

Quit PromNotch from its menu bar icon and drag the app from Applications to the Trash. If you downloaded the speech model, remove it first with the button in dictation settings.

If something goes wrong, write to support and we will help.

FAQ

Is it safe to open an app that is not notarized by Apple?

Notarization is a separate Apple check a developer goes through. Its absence does not make an app harmful, but only download files from the developer's own site.

Will I have to confirm every time?

No, only on first launch. After that the app opens as usual.
